Acceptance

Their faces gazed up at me expectantly, fully prepared to engage in
whatever activity I had planned for them. The truth was, I didn't really
have something specific in mind; I only knew I wanted the twenty or so five-
year olds to laugh and play while I hopefully taught them something useful.
I decided that I couldn't go wrong with paint and crayons, so I took out
the art supplies and created a spur-of-the moment activity using the
alphabet and numbers. I felt like I was learning as much as the
kindergartners were; they were soaking up letters and numbers just as I was
getting used to my role as a teacher. As the day progressed, I grew more
and more comfortable with myself as well as with the children. The
nervousness with which I first entered the classroom evaporated in the
presence of so many delightful, joyous, intelligent young kids.

This volunteer position at my son's kindergarten helped me become more
and more aware of how much I love working with young children. Being a
parent has of course changed my life; I have a three-year old girl named
Greer and a seven-year old son named Ben. Their sparkling energy definitely
induced me to work more closely with other children and develop my innate
talents as a teacher. After volunteering for my son's kindergarten class, I
began to think more and more about teaching professionally. Fortunately, I
was able to volunteer at another local school, which reinforced my growing
desire to teach.
Through my experiences with my own kids as well as in a class setting,
I have learned how to be more patient and understanding of children's
needs. Teaching is the most challenging thing I have ever done, and each
time I enter a classroom I know that I may be greeted by the unexpected.
However, teaching is the occupation most suited for my needs, my abilities,
and my personality. I can't think of anything more rewarding than to help
young kids learn, grow, and devel...
